Piña Assaf, MD  January 26, 1943 – April 5, 2015 Jorge Ignacio Piña Assaf, 72, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Jorge Ignacio Piña Assaf was born January 26, 1943 in Mexico City, MX to Elena Assaf Elias and Ignacio Piña Duran. He began his medical education at the Military Medical School in Mexico City and received his medical degree from the University of Guadalajara in 1969. That same year, Jorge Piña Assaf married Maria Silvia Galindo on December 26 in Manzanillo, MX whom he had met a year earlier on June 1, 1968. On October 22 of the following year, they had their first born, Sylvia, soon after moving to El Paso, TX. Dr. Piña specialized as a general surgeon in Wichita, KS from 1971 to 1975. During this time, they had three more children – Jorge, Lloyd, and Spencer. He and his family later moved to El Paso, TX where he taught an intensive anatomy program at the University of St. Lucia while working at a plasma center and later opened his own practice. They had their fifth child, Wesley, in 1981. Around the mid 1990s, Dr. Piña returned to practicing family medicine and relocated to Falfurrias, TX in 1998. A year later, his family settled down in Irving, TX where he worked in his beloved profession as a family doctor with Family Medical Clinic of North Dallas while also working as an on-call physician for the West Texas Counseling drug rehabilitation clinic in the Dallas/Irving area. From time to time, he also served as a ringside doctor for various MMA and boxing sporting events. Dr. Piña was a life-long knowledge seeker and never passed up an opportunity to share his wisdom. He enjoyed reading, especially about his roots, and learning new things. He also enjoyed traveling and was able to visit several locations around the world including Europe, Turkey, Jordan, Jerusalem, Petra and Egypt. Another one of his passions was photography and photo restoration, which he would do as a hobby on his spare time, along with listening to music and tinkering with odd jobs around the house – he was very good at learning anything he set his mind to. Dr. Piña loved being involved and was always eager to help people to the best of his ability.
